Today, I had the privilege of presenting my proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2026 to the Board of Commissioners and to our community. This year’s proposal reflects a $66 million decrease from the 2025 approved budget. We took a zero-based budgeting approach, reviewing each line item to ensure we are making the most responsible use of taxpayer dollars while maintaining the high-quality services our residents expect. Just like many families and businesses, we’re navigating the impacts of inflation and economic uncertainty. Thanks to the leadership of my Citizens Budget Review Committee and their collaboration with our county departments and elected offices, this proposed budget continues to prioritize public safety, infrastructure, and the essential services that support our growing community. Key investments include: Upgrading our 911 phone system to improve emergency response Continuing to expand Community Resource Centers, including the new hub on Grayson Highway Maintaining safe roadways through proactive repaving Protecting our water resources with reliable water, wastewater, and stormwater services I’m grateful to the residents who served on this year’s citizen review committee and helped shape this proposal with their thoughtful recommendations. The capital budget makes up $409 million of Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson’s proposed $2.6 billion budget and maintains existing infrastructure like buildings, parks, and roads, and pays for new ones. Water Resources is responsible for the largest category of the capital budget at 42 percent, followed by 14 percent for transportation. This portion of the budget includes funding for SPLOST revenue-sharing with our cities, public safety, parks, technology, and other capital needs. The Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG or Georgia’s County Association) recently awarded Henry County officials with certificates for completing requirements in the ACCG Lifelong Learning Academy. Recipients were presented with their achievement certificates during the Association’s 2025 Legislative Leadership Conference at the Jekyll Island Convention Center in Glynn County. Vice Chairwoman and District II Commissioner Neat Robinson was honored for successfully completing the County Operations and Management specialty track requirements in the Lifelong Learning Academy. ACCG and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia (CVIOG) have collaborated for more than two decades to provide county officials with supplemental training and educational tools in the Lifelong Learning Academy. With abundant courses from which they may choose, every county official has a tailor-made learning experience that allows them to excel in specific areas of expertise. We’re pleased to share highlights from Tuesday’s ribbon cutting ceremony for Douglas County’s new Waste Transfer Station and Recycling Center located at 1730 County Services Road in Douglasville. The state-of-the-art SPLOST-funded facility replaces the previous Transfer Station which was destroyed by fire in October 2023. Effective immediately, recyclable materials such as mixed paper, plastic bottles and jugs, cardboard and more will be accepted at the recycling center. The waste transfer station will officially open to residential and commercial haulers in county and out of county on Monday, December 22. The hours of operation for both facilities are 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The following items will be accepted: - household trash - construction and demolition debris - yard waste We extend our gratitude to the community for their patience and support as our Public Works team worked to provide upgraded solutions for Douglas County’s waste management and recycling needs. #OneDouglasForwardTogether
